ELCA 35th Anniversary-Then and Now |
ELCA Churchwide Assembly August 2022
The ELCA celebrated our 35th anniversary at the 2022 Churchwide Assembly.
This was a time for us to look back at the people and events that have shaped our church.
On April 30, 1987, the American Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Church in America, and the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches united to form the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
They gathered in Columbus, Ohio for the Constituting Convention of the ELCA, where the ELCA Churchwide Assembly convened again in 2022.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with nearly 3.5 million members in more than 9,100 worshiping communities across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region. Known as the church of “God’s work. Our hands,” the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ, unity among Christians and service in the world. The ELCA’s roots are in the writings of the German church reformer Martin Luther.
